The University of Minnesota Libraries has just published “Surprises at Every Turn: UMN Libraries Brings Large Collection of Pop-up Books to the World,” celebrating Dennis Frahmann’s donationof over 1,000 pop-up books to the Children’s Literature Research Collections (CLRC).
The post has a decidedly library-oriented slant, focusing in part on the unique challenges and opportunities a collection like this poses to library workers:
“We were excited to explore best practices for describing the interactive and dynamic nature of these works,” said Rebecca Ammerman, Metadata Management & Outreach Library. […] “The Dennis Frahmann Pop-Up Collection project has challenged us to expand our descriptive vocabulary to adequately record these features,” says Ammerman. […] The ASC Cataloging Unit collaborated with staff across library departments engaged in similar cataloguing of interactive, tactile works to improve their descriptions. For example, flaps were often used to illustrate anatomy in medical textbooks. This is where Theresa Berger, Digital Library Services Director, and Emily Beck, Associate Curator for the Wangensteen Historical Library, proved invaluable. They shared insights from working with flap anatomy books, and helped their colleagues collect terms that described specific interactive features, greatly enriching the options for descriptive terms.
And there’s more as well. Visit the post to learn about the background of the donation and to view more photos of some of the movable books included in it.
